REVIEW – New Song “The Fall” by Gregory Alan Isakov

By Cassidy Byrnes

I just keep stumbling back to Gregory Alan Isakov with his airy, at times, thundering voice and homey production that puts one in the mood to build a campfire. Luckily, he has just dropped a new single, “The Fall”, off of his upcoming album, “Appaloosa Bones”, which will be his first LP in almost 5 years.
“The Fall,” definitely has that COVID-written feel with lyrics like, “Time was a bust,” and “We’re all holding our breath”, but even through that, this entire track is about accepting failures and letting “the fall” happen, without immediately criticizing it.
The production on the single has Isakov’s typical stomp and holler/folk feel with a steady, heavy drum beat, but has the addition of a delicate string/key melody carrying the movement. The string and key parts pair well with his higher range of vocals, which are layered throughout the track.
Gregory Alan Isakov is set to perform at Palace Theatre in Saint Paul for the second time this year on September 30th, and be sure to listen for more tracks like this on August 18th with the release of “Appaloosa Bones.”
