REVIEW – Daphne Jane dreams of intimacy on new song “Months”

By Macie Rasmussen

If Daphne Jane wrote a song about you, it would be impossible to convince yourself that you’re not the protagonist. Lyrically and texturally, the local artist’s new single “Months,” set to be released June 16, clearly comes from the same inventory as previous releases, like 2022’s “Green” and “February.” The key components remain, with blunt, straightforward storytelling and bubbly vocals. Beginning with blissful guitar chords, then quickly jumping into an upbeat pop groove, “Months” is the artist’s punchiest track yet. It’s a piece of pure bedroom pop – “bedroom” not as in sparse or low quality production – but as in intimate ambiance.

The song’s playful, carefree melody is juxtaposed with exhausted lyrics as Jane sings, “Sick and tired of the months between the days/You should be at home girl, won’t you stay.” The catchy chorus elicits a light head bob, a tapping foot, and the thoughts, “Do they want me?” and  “Will they ever want me?” floating through the listener’s mind. “Months” is fitting background music for a sunny stroll on a summer day.

The release marks Jane’s first song co-written with another artist: Guitarist Nate Walker – who also served as the producer and plays with the local act Aiden Intro.

Daphne Jane performs at Fine Line on June 24. Tickets here.
